And the number that surged next was one no system flagged: 25 appeared 0× in the training half and 2× in the test half. That is what independence looks like up close — the “due” numbers go quiet and an unwatched number runs.
Ten draws is far too small to conclude anything on its own. That is the point of the next section.
Walk-forward backtest — up to 999 draws
At every draw, each strategy sees only the draws before it and is scored against the very next result. No lookahead. This is the same discipline used to evaluate trading strategies, and it is the only way to avoid grading a system on data it already saw.

So a number appearing 131 times instead of 111 is only a 2σ deviation — and across 54 numbers you should expect 2.5 of them by chance alone. Every hot number you have ever seen in a window this size lives inside that noise band.
The uncomfortable part, stated plainly
At 80% power, 999 draws can only detect a shift from 11.11% to 13.90% — a 25% relative distortion, the kind a visibly deformed ball would produce.
But the bias needed to merely double a ticket’s expected value is only 12.2% relative — which lands at z = 1.37, below the detection threshold. The profitable bias is invisible at this sample size. That cuts against prediction, not for it: any number chosen on this basis is a coin flip wearing the costume of analysis. And doubling EV only takes a game from roughly 50% return to break-even, before tax — while Texas rotates and re-certifies ball sets, which destroys persistence anyway.

One real result: a ticket becomes nominally positive expected value once the cash jackpot passes roughly $20.7M. The catch is decisive — larger jackpots draw more players, so expected splitting rises exactly when EV would turn positive, and the variance is such that the median lifetime outcome is still total loss.

Statistician Mohan Srivastava reverse-engineered the tic-tac-toe game's printing algorithm, identifying winners before purchase. A deterministic manufacturing process, not a random draw.
- Multi-State Lottery Association2005–2011RNG fraud
Eddie Tipton inserted a rootkit making the software RNG's seed computable on specific dates. The only 'prediction' case on record — it was criminal fraud, and it is precisely why draws use physical ball machines.
Not one came from analysing past winning numbers — and not for lack of extremely well-funded people trying.
So what does work?
One lever has a genuinely positive expected-value derivative: choosing numbers other people avoid. Payout is split among winners, and roughly 70–80% of players use dates, so combinations drawn from above 31 are underplayed by a factor of two to four. This does not change your probability of winning — it raises what you keep if you do. It is the factor weighted most heavily in this app’s scorer, and it is the only edge on the table.
